Workshop Descriptions
Designing Performance Tasks and Scoring Rubrics

Time Frame: (1 day)

Concern over the limitations of traditional testing methods has led to recommendations for the development of more "authentic" tasks to assess important learning goals (e.g., problem solving, understanding) and support meaningful learning. In this workshop, participants will working in "job-alike" groups to design a performance assessment task and accompanying scoring tool (s) using a set of practical and proven design templates. A variety of excellent print, video and Internet resources will be available to support the design work.

More specifically, we will:
  • identify the characteristics, advantages, and limitations of performance-based assessments

  • learn a structured process for constructing "authentic" performance tasks using a set of design templates

  • construct scoring rubrics and performance lists for evaluating products and performances

  • use assessment design standards to review the designs and give feedback for refinement

Note: Since this workshop involves assessment design, participants should bring materials (e.g., content standards, textbooks, resource materials, assessment ideas, scoring rubrics, etc.) to support their design work.

Target Audience: Teachers, curriculum designers and assessment specialists at all levels.
