Understanding by Design and Differentiated Instruction:
Teaching for Understanding in Academically Diverse Classrooms


Time Frame: (3-6 hours)

This workshop will explore the connection between Understanding by Design and the use of differentiated instructional practices to address the needs of all learners. We will explore the underlying principles of these mutually supportive approaches, and learn practical planning, teaching and assessment strategies.
More specifically, participants will examine:

  • appropriate use of differentiation in the context of standards-based education

  • how differentiation connects with the "backward design" planning process

  • key research findings supporting Understanding by Design and Differentiated Instruction

    Target Audience: Teachers (grades 3-12), school and district administrators, curriculum and staff developers
