Teaching and Assessing for Understanding
Time Frame: (2 days)
This workshop will explore the following questions through a series of thought-provoking exercises and design experiences. How does teaching for deep understanding differ from coverage- or activity- oriented instruction? What instructional practices are both engaging and effective for developing student understanding? How will we know that students truly understand and can apply their knowledge in a meaningful way? How do the six facets of understanding contribute to our design of instruction and assessment? How do understanding-based teachers think about teaching, learning, and assessment? What characterizes understanding-based classrooms and schools? How are Design Standards used to improve the quality of instructional planning and assessment designs?
More specifically, participants will:
plan and design instruction for developing and deepening student understanding
select and organize content knowledge worth understanding
assess student understanding of ?big? ideas and core processes
examine student work to uncover misconceptions
use understanding-based instructional strategies
apply the six ?facets? of understanding for instruction and assessment
develop a set of observable characteristics for analyzing and improving instruction
use Design Standards to review instruction and assessment designs
examine print, videotape and Internet resources to support teaching and assessing for understanding
Target Audience: Teachers (grades 3-12), school-based administrators, staff developers, college faculty
